CURATORIAL

Twenty-Two years ago, I initiated a curatorial path for an Arts Council on the East End of Long Island, NY. This led to the rental of an old fish warehouse, and Whitney Art Works was born. It eventually moved to three different spaces in Portland, ME and kept me on a course of inspiration and support for hundreds of artists, both as a gallery director, and as a freelance curator.

I find the curatorial process to be creative and innovative. A friend of mine, Wendell Walker, has described exhibition work as sculptural – a concept which I have intrinsically experienced over those many years. The art of selection and presentation of the work of others based on a central construct is intellectually stimulating and wonderful. Gathering visual information, installing the exhibition and creating a space for the artwork to present that information is a refined and rewarding process.
